The attractive Palazzo Pomarici dating to the seventeenth century, which is also called “Palazzo delle Cento Stanze” (the palace of the hundred rooms) due to its large dimensions, houses an extraordinary collection of Italian and international sculpture from the end of the 19th century to the present day. These include works in stone, tuff, marble, bronze, iron, steel, terracotta, plaster, ceramics, papier-mâché and wood as well as drawings, etchings and jewellery.
The setting of the museum is particularly evocative and it occupies both the rooms of the Palazzo and the many hypogeums (subterranean spaces) where the works of art on display interact with the beauty of the spaces hewn into the living rock.
The museum, run by the Zètema Foundation with the patronage of the City Authorities and the “La Scaletta” Club of Matera, is also home to another rare and important collection: The Scheiwiller Library that contains about 3,000 books and catalogues donated by the wife of the famous Milanese publisher of this name.
