Built of stout walls made of tamped earth and wooden beams, the magnificent tulou (earth buildings) are several stories tall and were designed to accommodate hundreds of Hakka, persecuted Han Chinese who migrated south from north China. The buildings are typically accessed by a single large door, which is still locked every evening. Tulou have been added to the UNESCO World Heritage List.
