The Grishneshwar Jyotirlinga Temple is based in the Verul village, about 30 km away from Aurangabad. The famous Ellora Caves are quite close to the temple. This holy temple is a specimen of pre-historic art and architecture. The complete temple building is made up of red rocks. History states that earlier a Shiva devotee, Bhosale discovered a treasure in an ant hill. He used the money to build the temple premises and a lake here. This holy shrine was later on renovated by Ahilyabai Holkar in the 18th century. There are exquisite sculptures of the divine Lords and Lordesses in the temple. The walls have holy inscriptions and other messages that are beautifully carved on them. The temple has five tier shikara and is 240 * 185 feet long. You can see fine excavations of Dashavataras carved in red stone on the walls on the way to the temple. The paintings and statues are quite attractive and beautiful. The main gallery of the temple is constructed on 24 strong concrete pillars. The Garbhagriha is in square shape with each side 17 feet long. The Jyotirlinga murty is placed facing the east direction in the temple. This temple is also familiar by the name Ghushmeswara Jyotirlinga Temple.
