The Camargue Nature Park, or the Parc Naturel Regional de Camargue in Provence, France is an area of around 820 square kilometers. The park is one of the most protected places in Europe and was officially designated as a Nature Reserve and Regional Park in 1970.Situated in Les Bouches de Rhone - the Mouths of the Rhone - the whole Camargue region is over 930 square kilometers and is actually a delta island formed by the two River Rhone arms and the Mediterranean Sea. There are very few towns in the Camargue - Arles to the north, Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer in the southwest and the ancient town of Aigues-Mortes in the west, are the only important settlements in the region.The Parc Naturel Regional de Camargue in Provence, France is a truly wild park with all kinds of flora and fauna. More than 400 species of birds can be found in the park, even the greater flamingo. The bulls, bears and famous Camargue horses roam over the plains.The northern section of Camargue, near Arles, is agricultural, with rice paddies, vineyards and fields of wheat and other grains. Close to the sea shore, there is a flourishing salt industry, started in the 19th century by influential chemical companies. Originally begun by the Romans in the 1st century, the salt extraction continued on into the Middle Ages and brought wealth to the area.For an unusual vacation the Parc Naturel Regional de Camargue in Provence, France would be a good choice. Arles dates back to 49BC and is a lovely, bustling town. Aigues-Mortes is a medieval town built by Louis IX as a fortress sea-port.
