art brut, which translates from french to ?rough art,? describes works created by untrained, non-traditional artists. in the case of the museum gugging, the creators were patients at the former psychiatric hospital, making their exhibitions startlingly unique. the open, light space offers the artists a fabulous venue to show their work, and it is not uncommon to see them working on their projects on the museum grounds. austria's art brut scene has prospered greatly thanks to the facilities in gugging and has brought forth artists like august walla and johann hauser who are both on exhibit here.
