The industrial quarter underwent rapid development in the 19th century, eventually housing a wide variety of factories, plants, mills and stores. Some of these buildings are still standing today and are unique in terms of their architecture. The Rotermann Salt Store, which was constructed in 1908 to the plans of Baltic German engineer Ernst Boustedt, has been placed under heritage protection and is currently home to the Estonian Architecture Museum.
