Radu Voda Monastery

Frumoasa Monastery is an Orthodox monastery, founded in the sixteenth century by hetman Melinte Balica.

Ensemble of Frumoasa monastery  is a historical monument and is composed of:

Church "St. Voivodes" - dating from the period 1836-1839.

Palace on the walls - dating from the period 1818-1819.

Ruins of the Palace "for women" - princesses palace, now in ruins located at the entrance into the monastery, is dating from the eighteenth century.

Bell tower - dating from the period 1819-1833.

Defense Wall - dating from the period 1726-1733.

Mausoleum of Grigore Sturdza - dating from the 1833 is located near the church.

On February 12, 1618, ruler Radu Mihnea raised the church to the rank of monastery.

Ruined monastery, was rebuilt in 1729 by the ruler of Moldavia, Grigore II Ghica. In coming years ruler Matei Ghica, son of Grigore II Ghica, conducted a series of  restoration at Frumoasa monastery.

During the reign of Ionita Sandu Sturdza and Mihail Sturdza, the monastery had many utilizations: hospital and prison.

On the eastern side of the defense walls, is an open wood gate known as  the hanging Gate. The gate used to lead to an organized place where public executions (by hanging) of robbers were made between 1820 and 1845.
