Queen Emma Summer Palace is known in Hawaiian as Hanaiakamalama (The Southern Cross) and served as a retreat for Queen Emma between 1857 to 1885. The frame of the house was originally built in Boston and shipped to Hawaii where it was erected in the upper reaches of Nuuanu Valley, which was for a long time popular with royalty and wealthy as the climate in the valley was more relaxing than along the coast. Queen Emma added the Edinburgh Room at the rear of the palace in 1869 in preparation for a visit from the Duke of Edinburgh. Among the rooms open to the public is the bedroom.Hawaiian Monarchial Government brought the land after the death of the queen. There were plans to build a baseball park over the site, but the Daughters of Hawaii brought the site and preserved the palace. It is next to Nuuanu Vally Park and Queen Emma Square.Car: Queen Emma Summer Palace is about 5 miles from Waikiki by Nuuanu Valley Park. Take the 1 Hwy west and then the Pali Hwy (61) north.
