The Pastel de Nata is believed to have been first developed during the 18th century by Catholic nuns based in the Mosteiro dos Jeronimos, that stands across the road from the Casa Pasteis De Belem. The nuns baked these sweet cakes as a method of raising extra funds for the upkeep of the monastery. The Casa Pasteis De Belem bakery was the first place to master the recipe from the convent and started to sell the cakes to the public.
