Kamshet, a well-known hill station in Maharashtra, is located at an elevation of 220 ft above sea level. It comprises of small villages which still exist in their traditional form of mud and thatch. Apart from paragliding, Kamshet is also popular for its caves. Bedsa Caves considered as Hinayana Buddhist caves are the oldest of all caves that belong to the 1st Century.
Bedsa Caves are man-made, and comprises of two caves ? the Chaitya and the Vihara. Chaitya Cave, the main cave, is a prayer hall that treasures a beautiful Stupa. The 4 pillars in the cave, which are 25 feet high, are enhanced with the carvings of elephants, horses and bulls with male and female riders crowning the pillar. The ridged roof is supported by 26 octagonal pillars which are 10 feet high each.
On the other hand, the Vihara Cave, a monastery where the monks lived, consists of 9 cells and some side cells. Both the caves face the east direction and an early morning visit to them is recommended in order to have a clear observation of such exquisite creation in the bright sunlight.
