I honestly don’t think that Erdogan is a fix, rigid democrature. He is a political survivalist and an opportunist, he was with EU, once he was against the army, now he is the sum of “deep Turkey”; looking at the unprecedented devastation in southeast, I can even speculate that he is the front face of a ruling military. I don’t belive “the wrecking of the economy”: the re-allocation of public spending priorities made general populace happy. The retired receive more, the poor has means to collect money… it was basically the same approach when late president Demirel the phoenix said “I will top the price of cotton: who gives any buying price, our government will give 5 more” democracy became a democratoriat when the GDP is under $12K. Having said that; the terorists branded as islamic state, has their ways in mosquee networks and the Turkish intelligence wasn’t present in those closely knitted sub-cultural groups. Block voting capability of such groups makes them a natural ally for the ever-opportunist politicians. The liberal voice is the only way out of this deep hole. The pakistani example (remember how they freed from india, how they were evolving and dominating the islamic literature etc..) is not comparable to Turkey. The ordinary turkoman doesn’t care for the religion, the islamic conservatives are not all salafists or jihadists. That doesnt appeal to young generations with iphones. The ordinary Turk is a conservative liberal per se. But the reel threat is the closely knitted networks of small cults, called “cemaat”. every leader of such cult have absolute power over the beliefs of his sheep and quoting the book, quoting the prophet, quoting the canonic archaic principles of some desert tribe, he creates a small flock of followers. there lays the danger for Turkey. impenetrable cells of brain washed peons. Failing to expose and destroy those cells, erdogan and his cronies may soon face the same fate of their historical examples.
