2015 is quite a landmark year for Cape Elizabeth! The town will mark its 250th Anniversary on November 1, 2015. Pond Cove has been honored to play a central role for this exciting commemoration. Our 3rd graders created a mural of important landmarks and events in Cape that is partially pictured above and adorns our entryway as a permanent art installation; our 1st graders created a replica of the town’s most famous landmark, Portland Head Light, that is surrounded by a multimedia tide pool and soars permanently in our school lobby; our 4th graders performed current and historical vignettes about the town through Broadway-worthy physical theater; our 2nd graders traveled around Cape to take photos and craft corresponding poetry worthy of future laureates; and a “250th Birthday Cake” was created by our kindergartners and won 1st place in the Cape Family Fun Day float parade this past summer! [photos]. All of these multidisciplinary projects have provided innovative opportunities and have been emblematic of what makes Cape such a wonderful place to live and learn. We have been extremely grateful to CEEF and the PCPA for their joint funding of the intensive artists-in-residency that made our 3rd and 4th grade 250th projects possible, to CEEF for funding a marine educator and artist-in-residence who worked with our 1st graders on their 250th projects, the Cape Elizabeth Historical Preservation Society that donated their generous time and invaluable information, and to the Cape Elizabeth 250th Anniversary Committee that organized a plethora of events that our children, families and other residents will remember for years to come. We also have been especially grateful to our town elders and other Cape natives who volunteered their time to share amazing stories of growing up in Cape that captivated all of us and helped foster intergenerational relationships that we plan to continue.
